GREED

Just when you had thought you had freed yourself from the ‘overgrown lizards,’ as Eden liked to call them, he was leading you right back in the dragon’s den.

Literally.

And you had readily agreed.

“Do not look at me like that, witchling,” he had said, two flickers of neon watching you pace back and forth in his office after he had invited you to join him as his partner to the annual gala the very clan who had tried to purchase the building your bakery was in was hosting. “They hold no ill will towards either of us. They know it was just business.”

“Just business, right,” you had muttered, hands beginning to shake in nervousness as you practically wore through his dark marble floors. Then, you had abruptly stopped, pivoting on your heel with a squeak to glare at him. “I thought you didn’t even know them that well!”

He had blinked once in response, the tip of his tail flickering before he waved his hand dismissively, finally saying, “We run in the same circles, is all. I’m sure I told you this.”

Not in as many words, you had wanted to say, but your already-spiraling brain couldn’t convince your mouth to form them. Instead, you had wrung your hands helplessly as he had continued with, “It is a superb networking opportunity for me, but I would understand if you would rather not accompany me.” The corners of his lips twitching downward while a quick flash of disappointment dulled his eyes before he looked away. Then they widened, as if he was remembering himself, meeting yours again. His smile looked too tight when he gave an airy shrug. “Although, if it makes you feel any better, word on the street is that Cadmus has his hands full. I’ve also heard he is planning to make some big announcement, so I’m sure he is occupied with that as well…”

You had chewed on your bottom lip, a whole host of excuses already queued up in your mind. If it wasn’t the dragons, it was the fact that you knew such an event would draw a big crowd that would certainly be swimming with demons, and though you had made some progress with Eden and Evie, you weren’t quite ready to face the music with others. Conveniently, this was related to another point: the fact that you couldn’t dance.

But when you had voiced the latter part of your argument, Eden had merely laughed. “Did they not have those festive Yuletide balls at that university of yours?”

“I never got to go to one,” had been your sullen retort. His brows had knit together at this, mouth dropping open slightly at your honest admission. Studying you in silence for a few seconds, he had then risen to his feet, making his way to where you had stood hopelessly in the middle of his large office.

“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, witchling,” he had drawled, his tail wrapping around your wrist as a playful glint shimmered in his eyes, “than are dreamt of in your black and white television shows.
